Assignments in On Duty are distinct from schedules.  Schedules determine when employees work.  Assignments determine what they will do when they are working.  There are two wizards for assignments: the Automatic Assignment Wizard and the Manual Assignment Wizard.  Both wizards simplify aspects of filling positions with the right people.  Depending on how you set things up, the Automatic Assignment Wizard will fill more or fewer positions.  Some departments fill vacancies based on rules and priorities...things a computer program likes to work with.  Other departments fill vacancies based on intuition, judgment and other subjective factors...things a computer program doesn't have a clue about.  If you choose to do more automatically, then you will have less work to do with the Manual Assignment Wizard.  If you choose to do more manually, On Duty will make it quick, easy and painless.

The assignment process in On Duty handles numerous complex situations.  For example, a particular patrol car might have a single person assigned to it during the day shift, but two people assigned to it in the evening.  No problem.  Another car might not even be used during the early morning shift.  No problem.  Some positions are always filled by the same employee when he or she is working, but filled by a certain other employee when the first one is off.  No problem.  Some positions should be filled when vacant, and others left vacant if the permanently assigned person isn't working.  No problem.  On Duty can be configured to handle virtually any scheme for assigning employees to jobs.

As you can see from the screen above, filling unassigned positions manually is a snap.  Pick an open position from the list, pick an employee and click the Assign button.  Pick the next position and the next employee and away you go.  When you run out of positions or employees (or in an ideal world, both at the same time), you're done!

Sometimes, you have to change an assignment after it is already made.  The following screen shows how easy it is to edit an existing assignment.  Once you pick the assignment from the list, you can change the employee, the position, or both.  Assignments can also be deleted very easily, making both the position and the employee available for new assignment.
